Weight training is one of the most misunderstood forms of exercise today and unfortunately one of the most popular amongst men. It is also known as resistance training as you apply resistance to your muscles through an external source - such as lifting a weight, pulling a cable or using a machine.

It is used to build muscle tissue, thicken ligaments and strengthen joints.

This training discipline should be started light and progressed through to heavier loads over time. This will ensure your body has time to adapt to the strains put upon it and avoid injury. It will help you to establish correct exercise technique, correct muscle development and flexibility. By embarking on a heavy load weight training regime before your body has adapted to it properly can seriously damage your ligaments, tendons, strain muscles and cause joint problems. Start off light, combine a good core training regime and in time your body will be ready for some seriously tough weight training.

I can provide you with a weight training regime to suit your needs whether you are looking to bulk up or just add a bit more strength. You will get a thorough program individually suited to you.

Common misconceptions regarding weight training....

For Women

I am female and I don't want to look like a body builder

This is not going to happen, the absence of the male hormone testosterone will not allow the general female to 'beef up' or get 'ripped' without using growth hormones, steroids and training and eating for hours and hours a day. Infact women that don't embark on a weight training program or any other form of muscle building exercise run a large risk of muscle depletion through not working the muscle groups enough to sustain a healthy level of muscle mass.

For Men

I weight train in the gym 4 times a week so I don't need to do fitness training

Weight training does not increase your fitness levels or aerobic capacity. You may have a nice looking body, rippling muscles but this doesn't mean you are fit. So relying soley on weight training as a training discipline won't exactly do your health any good. Yes you will be stronger but your heart, lungs and other such muscles used in aerobic exercise will not get used. Only fitness training will achieve this and if you don't follow a decent fitness training regime as well as your weight training then you run the risk of many health concerns.
